The novella is set on a planet called Lobon, where the protagonist, Benton, is a farmer who faces a peculiar and dangerous problem: the local wildlife, particularly a species called the 'rolligons,' are mysteriously disappearing. Benton is determined to uncover the cause of this phenomenon, despite the skepticism of others who believe that the planet is simply unsuitable for farming.As Benton investigates, he discovers that the rolligons are being preyed upon by a previously unknown and highly intelligent species of predator. These predators are invisible and have the ability to paralyze their prey with a form of psychic attack. Benton, with the help of his loyal dog Towser, devises a plan to confront these invisible creatures.
