The Wrong Story

Claire Bennett arrives one minute late to pick up her niece from dance class. The child is already gone - collected by her grandmother, who says she was asked. Sadie is safe the entire time. Nothing happens.By that evening, three people have told a version of the afternoon in which Claire was the problem.Within a week, a note about her demeanor has been entered in a student's permanent file under another employee's login. The system cannot delete entries. Corrections only append. So Claire starts keeping a record. Times, names, exact words - the only thing in her life that has never contradicted her.It becomes the thing everyone points to as proof that something is wrong with her.In a town where every sentence is kind and every account is sincere, Claire discovers that a true record can tell an entirely false story, and that the people dismantling her life are the ones who love her most.No one in this novel lies. That is what makes it unbearable. The Wrong Story is a novel about reputation, memory, and the women who keep the records - perfect for readers of Angie Kim and Ashley Audrain, and for book clubs willing to argue about an ending that refuses to resolve.
