Bol Sir Arnold Theiler was one of the most eminent veterinarians of his time. This work begins by examining his discoveries and successes in controlling the bovine babesia species B. bigemina and its vector tick, Boophilus decoloratus. The questions of what we can still learn from Theiler today and how control strategies have changed between 1900 and 2014 have been examined. In addition, a risk analysis for Switzerland was carried out to determine whether red water disease could also spread and become established in Switzerland.
