Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can be defined as a metabolic disorder of various aetiologies characterised by chronic hyperglycaemia and comorbidities resulting from carbohydrate metabolism; it is characterised by dysfunction in insulin action and secretion. Models and scores to predict the development of type 2 diabetes have been developed based on classic risk factors such as age, sex, obesity, metabolic and lifestyle factors, family history of diabetes, and ethnicity.
