The Union of Youth for the Development of the Great Lakes Countries, abbreviated as "UJDPGL asbl," was founded on November 11, 2013, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a nonprofit, philanthropic, non-denominational civil society development organization. The idea to create the UJDPGL arose in response to the flawed border policies of countries in the African Great Lakes Region; youth unemployment and poverty, which risk inciting young people toward hatred, tribalism, and division-to the detriment of peace, cooperation, sustainable development, and stability-even though young people are the future. The UJDPGL operates in the African Great Lakes Region in general and, more specifically, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo-currently in the eight territories and the city of Bukavu that make up South Kivu Province. Its headquarters is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in South Kivu Province, specifically in Bukavu, in the Ibanda Commune, Ndendere neighborhood, on Patrice Emery Lumumba Avenue. Its areas of focus are: Peace & Human Rights; Education & Health; Food Security; Employment & Infrastructure.
