Since reading his poems in Nicaragua in 1989, Lewis has had a love of the Hispanic world. People there clearly recognise in him what Lorca identified as duende. His work is influenced by Neruda, Claribel Alegri¿ and the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, but at the same time he is steeped in the rural Kent of his youth and the Medway Towns. He explores the ends of all worlds and in between lies the Britain of Blake, MR James, Elgar and Vaughan Williams.
