Urban Growth: A Challenge for Access to Drinking Water in Bangui (CAR)

Bangui's urban growth has been rapid and uneven. The city has developed along a divide between urbanized, well-equipped neighborhoods and non-urbanized neighborhoods lacking basic urban infrastructure. The government's urban policy, focused on the master plan for development and urban planning, is no longer sufficient to effectively meet the city's needs. The unregulated occupation of space by informal settlements is a direct consequence of the government's urban governance policy. Water and sanitation services are struggling to cope with the city's rapid urban expansion. Access to drinking water and basic sanitation for the population is not fully guaranteed by these services. This raises a serious governance issue regarding these services in the face of the city's urban growth. The water distribution company's network does not cover the entire city. The sanitation system is in a state of severe disrepair. The water distribution company provides only 32% of the population's water supply. The rest of the city relies on boreholes and wells.
