Ureteroscopy

In the era of modern endourological surgery, the treatment of urinary stones by open surgery is an extremely rare option. Undoubtedly, the introduction of the ureteroscope has revolutionised urological practice in the management of upper urinary tract conditions. Indeed, endoscopic treatment - specifically ureteroscopy - is currently one of the most frequently used techniques for treating urinary stones. According to the recommendations of the American Urological Association and the European Association of Urology on urinary stones, ureteroscopy is recommended as the first-line option for distal ureteral stones and, on a par with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, for proximal stones [326]. The miniaturisation of endoscopic instruments, improvements in imaging techniques and the development of fragmentation methods have now made this treatment safe and effective. The advantages of this endoscope, which remain relevant today, include its low cost, excellent visualisation, the ability to record video and low morbidity.
