USS Cincinnati (SSN-693), a Los Angeles-class submarine, was the fourth ship of the United States Navy to be named for Cincinnati, Ohio. The contract to build her was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia on 4 February 1971 and her keel was laid down on 6 April 1974. She was launched on 19 February 1977 sponsored by Mrs. William Keating, and commissioned on 10 June 1978, with Commander Gilbert V. Wilkes, III in command. In August 1979, Cincinnati rescued a Finnish sailor 70 miles (100 km) off the east coast of Florida who had been in the water for 22 hours after falling overboard from the Finnish freighter Finnbeaver.
