The seeds of tomorrow's world are germinating in today's America. The same causes - the globalisation of competition, large-scale immigration, and incendiary questions of identity - are producing the same effects everywhere. America is now the incubator for modern societies. The author identifies eight trends in the evolution of American society: the abolition of retirement, an obsession with "safe spaces", vanishing civility (why eat with cutlery?), "cultural appropriation", an epidemic of attention deficit disorders in the young...etc. By examining lived experiences, this book traces these societal phenomena in everyday America. We see children drugged to stay calm, a neighbour terrorised by a paedophile threat, and a 72-year-old cashier who refuses to leave her job. We also follow the fight for white people's right to wear dreadlocks, a battle for transgender people to access public toilets, and the repercussions of a complaint about a "sexually aggressive" dance.
