He received a Bachelor of Science in 1934 from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He became a businessperson, then the mayor of Farmville, North Carolina from 1949 to 1953. He was a member of the North Carolina General Assembly from 1955 to 1959, and a member of the North Carolina State Senate in 1965.
