Watch Me Move

Published to accompany a major exhibition opening at the Barbican in March 2011, Watch Me Move presents the full range of animated imagery produced over the past one hundred years. Organized thematically, the book explores the emergence of the animated image, animation's well-loved characters, heroes and villains, its myths and fables, dramatic narratives, alternative realities and prophetic visions. Featuring work by such moving-image pioneers as Eadward Muybridge and the Lumiere Brothers, Watch Me Move also explores how contemporary artists, such as experimental filmmakers Stan Brakhag and Jan Svankmajer, have appropriated the medium. A wide range of animation forms are included, from hand-drawn, puppet, clay ad cutout to stop-motion, glass, pinscreen and computer animation. With essays by Greg Hilty and Paul Wells, and including biographies of the leading studios and animators, Watch Me Move offers a definitive guide to the dynamic world of the animated image.
