Water and Rice Farming Governance in the Lagdo Irrigation District (Cameroon)

This book provides an overview of water and rice farming governance in the Lagdo Irrigation District following the government's withdrawal-through the Lagdo Hydro-Agricultural Project-from infrastructure management and the supervision of farmers' organizations in 1998. Using a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative data collection tools, it examines the effective integration of farmers into water resource management in a context of declining agricultural development. The study finds that farmers are only marginally involved in access to water collection infrastructure, the distribution process, water pricing, and the resolution of conflicts over water access. Institutional and legislative reforms are therefore necessary to establish integrated water resource management. This scholarly work is highly instructive for students, researchers, farmers' organizations, and development agents specializing in irrigated agriculture and water resources management. It is also valuable for government officials in sub-Saharan African countries facing the challenge of sustainable development.
