Water Resources in Algeria: Wastewater treatment and reuse (bioremediation phytoremediation)

This study analyses statistical and scientific data on water resources in Algeria, particularly in the field of wastewater treatment and reuse. To this end, a field survey was carried out between October 2014 and February 2015, involving the collection of data from the relevant organisations, including the Ministry of Water Resources (MRE), the National Sanitation Office (ONA), wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), lagooning plants (SLs), the Ministry of Spatial Planning and the Environment (MATE), the wilaya environmental directorates (DEW), the National Centre for the Development of Biological Resources (CNDRB) and the National Coastal Commission (CNL). The results obtained showed that water resources - including surface water and groundwater - amount to 18 billion m³. These resources remain limited in relation to the population's growing demand. From a scientific and technological perspective, it was found that phytoremediation processes currently account for 56 per cent of wastewater treatment processes.
