After a disastrous attempt to liberate the fortress of Brëcht, Welkin is forced to flee the wrath of two noble houses. Along with Red Jenny, Célèm, and the former ranger, Briar, he finds himself far to the south once again employed as a mercenary. In the ancient city of Urbris Eterna, Welkin now plies his trade as a bravo for the head of the Southern Church, Rudolpho Batura, better known as Alexus III. Batura has saddled Welkin with his favorite son, a cruel young man named Juan. Tasked with keeping Juan out of trouble and ensuring the good name of the Batura family, Welkin breaks legs and batters kidneys in exchange for a safe haven from the two houses that want him dead. Too bad for Welkin, a whole new set of problems have found him. A creature of nightmarish proportions and bizarre predilections stalks the slums of the old city. What it wants and why it decided to attack Juan Batura are mysteries Welkin will have to unravel if he wants to keep his head, and the heads of his friends, on their collective shoulders.
