WELSH SPEARHEAD A History of the 53rd Reconnaissance Regiment 1941-1946

The 53rd (Welsh) Reconnaissance Regiment was a formation of the British Army's Reconnaissance Corps during the Second World War. Raised in January 1941, it served as the tactical "eyes and ears" of the 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division, performing the critical role of intelligence gathering and advance scouting.Tasked with reconnaissance, flank screening, and rapid reporting, the regiment operated Humber armoured cars, Bren Carriers, light tanks, and jeeps, combining mobility with firepower to maintain the division's situational awareness. The regiment landed in Normandy in late June 1944 as part of Operation Overlord, quickly establishing itself in the advance operations of the campaign. It played an active role in liberating Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands and later saw combat during the Battle of the Bulge, demonstrating resilience in both offensive and defensive operations. In the final months of the war, the unit fought in the gruelling Reichswald Forest during Operation Veritable, crossed the Rhine, and concluded its campaign in Hamburg. The regiment's cap badge,two lightning strikes supporting an upright spear,embodied its defining attributes: speed, precision, and striking impact on the battlefield.Originally published in Germany shortly after cessation of hostilities in 1945, and is categorised as rare in it's original 1946 printing.
