Western Hegemony and the Crisis of African Identity: Challenges Prospects for Postcolonial Sociopolitical Transformation

This book is an attempt to restore and defend African cultural identities and indigenous governing systems from undue Western hegemonic ideologies. The Westernization of the world realized through colonialism, globalization and neoliberalism, has been a defining feature of global politics and cultural exchanges. Postcolonial sociopolitical perspectives from Kwasi Wiredu to Achille Mbembe have sought to reclaim indigenous identities and assert sovereignty. The prospects for socio-political transformation in Africa depend on the profound understanding of these dynamics. Embracing indigenous knowledge systems, investing in education that promotes cultural awareness, and fostering inclusive governance can enhance societal cohesion. Addressing the crisis of African identity in the face of Western hegemony, requires a collective effort to valorize indigenous cultures, challenge neocolonial and neoliberal structures, and hence, reconstructing resilient societies capable of shaping their future.
