WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE THIRD ROME: CHAADAEV AND FAILED MISSION

For sixteen centuries, the same mistake has been made by men who meant no harm: the mistake of confusing what belongs to the soul with what belongs to the state. For this he became, in his own country, a synonym for dangerous despair, in a culture that had taught itself that a state without a sacred mission is no state at all. It proposes, instead, that the doctrine once whispered in the letters of a quiet monk might be returned to where it always belonged - not to thrones, not to flags, but to the private life of human beings, where it cannot be falsified by armies and cannot be embalmed in mausoleums.
