Young people go through a critical phase as they develop into adults. They are faced with the challenge of discovering their identity and sexual orientation. If it turns out that they belong to a sexual minority, this is usually a crisis situation which, in the worst case, can lead to suicidal thoughts and behaviour. This crisis situation usually arises from the fact that their sexual orientation differs from that of their peers and that they may also have experienced negative reactions to this issue from their social circle and family. It is possible to reduce the risk of suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young people. However, to do so, care staff must possess the knowledge of the risk factors in order to be able to design and offer interventions. Above all, education and social support for young people and their families are essential here.
