When Life Escapes Its Author: Local Agency, Biographical Direction and the Loss of Control

What does it mean to lose control of a life while remaining capable of managing each individual day?A person may still make decisions, fulfil obligations, organise treatment, administer debt, care for others, and act responsibly-yet discover that these competent actions no longer influence what his life is becoming. When Life Escapes Its Author examines this neglected form of biographical dispossession. The book introduces a fundamental distinction between local agency-the capacity to perform particular actions-and trajectory agency: the capacity to keep the cumulative direction of one's life responsive to purposes one can still recognise as one's own. It shows how illness, dependency, financial pressure, institutional power, irreversible decisions, caregiving, and accumulated obligation can preserve activity while progressively reducing authorship.Drawing on philosophy of action, psychology, sociology, life-course theory, capability theory, medical humanities, care ethics, and psychotherapy, Ryszard Nowosielski develops an integrated account of practical freedom without the illusion of human sovereignty. He examines corrective, relational, collective, interpretive, and delegated forms of authorship, together with the possibility of reallocating agency when control at one scale has disappeared. The book concludes with the Agency Audit, a rigorous framework for determining what has actually been lost, what remains, and whether the appropriate response is correction, resistance, coordination, delegation, revision, acceptance, or mourning.A precise philosophical inquiry for readers concerned with agency, autonomy, responsibility, illness, dependency, therapeutic practice, and the difficult boundary between adapting to reality and surrendering authorship of one's life.
