Where the Scarecrow Stood

On a Luzon paddy dyke, a scarecrow wears the faded rosette of a rebel army that fought a different occupier. Kicked into the water, it is standing again by morning. In 1942, career sailor Kawamura Haruki is transferred from fleet service into the Imperial Japanese Navy's Special Naval Landing Forces. Over the next three years, the war carries him to the jungles of New Georgia in the Solomon Islands, the dying fortress of Rabaul, and the collapsing mountain defense of the Cordillera range on Luzon. All the while, he carries a letter from his brother, a growing roster of the dead, and a memory he has never spoken aloud.Told in tightly focused vignettes and drawn from Japanese unit records, diaries, and postwar testimony, Where the Scarecrow Stood moves between battlefield, barracks, and memory, tracing not heroism but the slow erosion of certainty in a man trained to die. What keeps standing when the reason for standing is gone? For readers of James Jones, Ooka Shohei, and Tim O'Brien.
