Who is Jesus?: According to the Gospel Written by Mark

"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me" (Mark 8:34). Jesus calls us to "make disciples" (Mt 28:19). But what does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? Jesus answers this question most clearly and profoundly through His words and actions in the Gospel of Mark. Mark, writing to Roman Christians undergoing persecution, provides definitive proof in the last 8 chapters that Jesus, not their emperor, is the one true Son of God. Mark then spends the last 8 chapters documenting that the Son of God was the Suffering Servant of the Lord as He obediently walked the road to the cross. "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45). Discipleship comes from the word discipline.
