Will Democracy Persist

This book puts an essential question about our democratic regimes. The topic is not very original, but the question of the survival of these quite vulnerable is now very urgent. The book argues that modern democracy is more than just "rule by the majority"; without constraints, it risks becoming a "tyranny of the majority." While ancient models (Aristotle's polity) and modern varieties distinguish between democratic and authoritarian regimes, true democracy requires the integration of liberal values, social equality, and the protection of human rights. Key characteristics of real democracy include pluralism and compromise, necessary for governing heterogeneous societies and preventing one-party corruption. Democracy needs tolerance, ensuring the majority respects minority rights. Finally, fair elections and separation of powers must be functional, not just "political theater." Inequality, corruption, and violence are the major threats to democracy. Without actively addressing these, democratic institutions become mere hypocrisy.
