This remarkable first-person narrative of two women's life stories offers an account of two generations of a Zululand family. The tale reveals a little-known chapter in 19th-century colonial history, wherein well-to-do British and Irish traders took Zulu wives and adopted many Zulu cultural practices. Both Agnes, who tells the story, and her mother Winnefred, endured a difficult position as part of a mixed Zulu-Irish family that began when Winnefred married the dashing Irishman William Rorke. Both women's lives and loves are vividly retold, providing a set of riveting personal stories and an intriguing perspective on South Africa's charged racial history.
