This Cornish chronicle is the sequel to A Grain of Sand: Memoirs of A Cornish Childhood , and it opens in Liskeard about the time of the General Strike, when the author was a schoolgirl. His artistic and literary interests are evidenced by such things as her account of the Cornish origins of Jane Eyre, discoverd at school. (At the same period she records a meeting with Angela Brazil, the well-known author of schoolgirl books.) The story goes on to highlight her impressions while at Plymouth College of Art and her emotionally-charged secret search for her unknown father. Its climax comes in her strange paranormal sighting of coastal mine ruins that are connected with the family of the man she subsequently meets and marries, only to lose in the Second World War.
