This is an anthology of women's letters written during times of conflict in Britain from the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century to the end of World War II in 1945. The authors range from Lady Francis Nelson writing to her husband and Florence Nightingale reporting to her family from the Crimean front, through to ordinary, unknown women, most of whose letters have never before been published. This collection provides insights into the resilient and combative spirit of the women who waited at home for absent loved ones as well as those who engaged in the rigours of active service.
