Bol This book, ' Yala Swamp Wetlands of a Kind', presents evidence through time, some as far back as colonial times to demonstrate that Yala swamp reclamation may have been a false start after all. The reclamation may not be sustainable ecologically and economically. The evidence fished out from earliest studies on reclamation and additional mounting evidence to this notion include the fact that the water is reclaiming back part of the areas originally drained for farming, driving away the farmers. The second evidence is the fact that Lake Kanyaboli continues to maintain its water level despite the retaining dykes constructed to keep river Yala diverted to the Southern end of the swamp and Lake Kanyaboli at the extreme end of the swamp. In view of this, the book provides evidence to pitch for the conservation of Yala swamp and more so as a Ramsar site. It should be noted from the outset that Ramsar conservation principles do not preclude communities in swamp neighbourhoods from using the swamp for livelihoods.
