In his artistic research, the Anglo-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare (London, 1962) addresses issues of cultural identity. Here we find the black-skinned dandy, the headless Victorian protagonist, the astronauts and aliens dressed in typical African fabric. His spectacular installations contain provocative and destabilizing elements that stimulate new perspectives on the world. This is the first substantial book on Shonibare. Besides photographic material of his main output from 1994 onwards, it contains essays by experts exploring important background aspects of his work, like the trade in Dutch wax fabrics, the history of the dandy, the leisure of the Victorian aristocracy and the rise of modernism in Nigeria. Furthermore, an interview with the artist focuses on how Western art has influenced his work.
