He searched his whole life for a faith no one else still practiced - and Allah promised he would be raised on Judgment Day as a nation entirely by himself. Zaid ibn Amr ibn Nufayl never became a Muslim. He died a few years too early for that. But centuries of scholars have called what happened to him one of the strangest honors in the entire hadith literature: because he spent his life believing alone, with no community and no name for what he was, he alone will be raised on the Last Day as a nation unto himself. He was a member of one of the leading families of Makkah, an uncle and kinsman of the man who would become Umar ibn al-Khattab. Decades before Islam, he stood at the Ka'bah and told Quraysh to their faces that they had abandoned the religion of Ibrahim. He refused meat sacrificed to the idols. He spent his own wealth buying back infant girls marked for death. For all of it, his own household drove him from his city. This book follows Zaid from that public stand at the Ka'bah through his exile into the hills, across the long desert road to the scholars of Ash-Sham who could name his belief but not give him a single person who still held it, and finally to his death on the road home -- still searching, only a few years short of the very thing he had spent his whole life looking for. Companions of the Prophet is a growing series of true, illustrated stories about the men and women who stood beside the Prophet Muhammad PBUH -- with the goal of eventually telling every one of their stories, one book at a time.
