1887 Fire Insurance Maps and Atlas of Omaha, Nebraska: The Complete Sanborn Nebraska

In 1887 the Sanborn Map & Publishing Company of New York surveyed Omaha, Nebraska, for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction, with its height, use, occupant and hazards noted, alongside the hydrants, water mains and steam boilers that protected it. The volume opens with the surveyor's report and index and a key map of the whole city, then covers Omaha in thirty-nine sheets: the Union Pacific shops and yards and the smelting works along the Missouri River, the wholesale blocks of Farnam, Harney, Howard and Jackson Streets, the business district around Sixteenth and Douglas, the residential streets to the north and west, and the Union Stock Yards and packing houses at South Omaha.This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the 1887 Omaha survey, reproduced complete and in full color from the copy held by the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress: the title and index sheet, the key map and all thirty-nine numbered sheets, one to a page.
