In 1895 the Sanborn-Perris Map Co. of New York surveyed Kansas City for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and colour-coded for construction, with its height, use, street number and hazards noted, together with the hydrants, water mains, steam boilers and fire walls that the underwriters needed to know.Volume One opens on a report and index of every street and named building, then a key map of the whole city, and works block by block through the wholesale houses, packing plants and stock yards of the West Bottoms, the railroad yards and depots along the Kaw and the Missouri, the business blocks of Main, Delaware, Walnut and Grand, the hotels, theatres and churches, and the residential streets climbing the bluffs beyond. The surveyors' own report puts the population at 147,000, with seventeen fire stations, 142 paid men and 1,387 hydrants. This Exile Books edition reproduces the volume complete and in full colour: the title page, the report and index, the key map and all ninety-three numbered sheets with their ten skeleton supplements. Printed at 8.5 x 11 inches on heavy colour stock, it is a working reference for historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Kansas City address back to the 1890s.
