Straddling the urban and rural spheres, the peri-urban area is often equated with one or the other. Yet its dynamics follow a logic all its own, and this book is likely to make a significant contribution to regional planning. The rural region of Malo Gaga, located between the cities of N'Djamena and Koundoul in Chad, faces a problem of its space and society failing to adapt to the new demands imposed by these cities. The main processes of spatial transformation in this region are the urban sprawl of N'Djamena and the urbanization of Koundoul, resulting from decentralization. These are reinforced by additional micro-processes. The consequences for the region are reflected in the transformation of the landscape and spatial identity, the emergence of new forms of relationships with surrounding areas, the occurrence of conflicts over the exploitation of natural resources, and the gradual change in the inhabitants' way of life. By raising a debate on the viability of the third space in the study of peri-urban dynamics, this work is of interest to scientists, decision-makers, and local authorities.
