Der 1840 geborene Österreicher Carl Menger beschäftigt sich in seinem hier vorliegenden Werk 'Grundsätze der Nationalökonomie' mit Wert- und Preistheorie. Im Unterschied zur derzeit vorherrschenden Arbeitswertlehre, nach der sich die Preise von Gütern durch die Arbeit bestimmen, die für ihre Produktion investiert wird, spielt bei Menger die subjektive Einschätzung die entscheidende Rolle. Mit der Feststellung, dass der Wert eines Gutes mit steigender Menge abnimmt, ist Menger mit seinem 1871 erschienenen Werk einer der Pioniere der Grenznutzentheorie.
