This is the last volume of Karamzin's History, and was left unfinished. It covers the latter part of the Time of Troubles, a period of brutal civil war compounded by foreign intervention. Vasily Shuisky is crowned as Tsar, but his reign is shaken by an uprising led by a pretender to the throne, the second False Dmitry. With foreign assistance, rebels seize most of the country; later, Polish troops occupy the capital. Karamzin depicts the horrors of war, siege, and famine unflinchingly, but also shows heroism amongst the defenders of the state, who ultimately triumph.
