"Demonstrates beyond any reasonable doubt, that the Earth is not a globe." -Lutheran Witness (1890) "Gleason released one of the most accurate flat earth maps ever created." -Garrett, Flat Earth Trilogy Book of Secrets (2018) "Several American Adventists became outspoken flat earthers. The best-known was Alexander Gleason." -Schadewald, Worlds of Their Own (2008) "Ran experiments in true zetetic tradition on surface of Lake Erie and the roof of Buffalo City Hall to prove flatness of the earth." -Garwood, Flat Earth (2008) The works of 19th Century flat earth proponents, with their experiments and logic-based arguments which appear to prove the flat-earth theory, are of great interest to many modern readers, causing some to even question the widely accepted modern belief in the earth's rotundity. In 1893, American flat-earth proponent, machinist, surveyor, and civil engineer Alexander Gleason (1827 – 1909) sought by experiment and argument to prove the flat-earth theory in his book "IS THE BIBLE FR0M HEAVEN? IS THE EARTH a GLOBE?" In the first part of the book it is proven that the Bible is the inspired Book of God and henceforth the eternal Truth. In the second part the writer seeks to disprove the arguments generally advanced in favor of the so-called Copernican theory, and then he proceeds to "demonstrate beyond any reasonable doubt, that the earth is not a globe, that it does not move or rotate, that the sun moves, that the moon is not an opaque or non-luminous body, etc." The writer appears to show to the satisfaction of common sense that the modern universally accepted and taught theoretical astronomy, which claims the earth to be a globe, revolving around the sun, etc., is based on very weak arguments indeed, and that, on the contrary, it is not at all antagonistic to true science to accept the flat-earth theory. In one experiment Gleason performed on Lake Erie, he was able through a telescope to view land which, based on the curvature of the earth, should have been 400 feet below his line of sight: "I was invited to look through the leveled telescope. From the point where we stood to the Welland Canal on the Canada shore is 22 miles, and from the same point of observation to the mouth of the Niagara River (my first starting point), is 27 1/2 miles. We could behold the land at intervals all along the Canada shore to the mouth of the Niagara River, or the northern portion of Buffalo." In another experiment, Gleason "procured permission of the city officers, or those in charge of the City Hall, to ascend to the roof, the hall being one of the highest buildings in Buffalo" to demonstrate that the line of horizon doesn't change despite changes in elevation, as long as a glass lens is not used. Other arguments supporting the flat-earth theory include those based on the sun's altitude, the extent and form of the sun's rays, eccentricity of the sun's path, circumnavigation, perspective laws and vanishing points, and degrees of longitude. It is a highly entertaining book which everyone, especially every serious thinker unafraid to confront evidence which goes against their most firmly held beliefs, should read.
