An English Translation of The Private Sequence for the Śāntika Homa with Acala >Contents of this Volume: - English Translation of the Sequence: A careful rendering of the traditional Shidai of the Chuin-ryu lineage, maintaining the original structure of the esoteric practice as faithfully as possible.Historical Background of this Text The Sokusai no Goma no Watakushi no Shidai Tsuketari Fudō (息災護摩私次第付不動 / The Private Sequence for the Śāntika Homa with Acala), edited by Dōhan (道範) and later copied with additions by Yūkai Hōin (宥快法印) in June of the third year of the Bunroku era (1594 CE), is the ritual manual for the five-section homa (五段護摩), which concludes the Four Preliminary Practices. Based on the mountain retreat manual compiled by Seigen (成賢) of the Daigo-Henjiin (遍智院) lineage, who performed the retreat at the Inner Sanctuary (奥之院 / Okuno-in) with the Family Lord (部主 / Bushu) as Trailokyavijaya and stacking the firewood twice, Dōhan restructured it based on the Ono-ryu (小野流) transmissions and oral instructions inherited from Jōhen (静遍) of Zenrin-ji (禅林寺). He changed the Family Lord to PrajñāPāramitā Bodhisattva and stacking the firewood from twice to five times, establishing it within the Chūin-ryū lineage (中院流). The ritual progresses strictly through the sections of Agni (火天段 / Katen Dan), the Family Lord (部主段 / Bushu Dan), the Main Deity (本尊段 Honzon Dan), Every Deity (諸尊段 / Shoson Dan), and Worldly Devas (世天段 / Seten Dan), incorporating the profound esoteric practices of offering firewood and the mixture of offerings, culminating in the Ritual of Dismantling the Altar (破壇作法 / Hadan Sahō) to allow the practitioner to burn all karmic obstacles and attain the ultimate siddhi. Incidentally, while this sequence is currently read in Japanese as "Sokusai Goma Watakushi Shidai," Seio's (成雄) oral instructions dictate the reading "Sokusai no Goma no Watakushi no Shidai.
