The Urban Literatus: A Biography of Zhang Dai/都市文人：张岱传

Zhang Dai is a highly distinctive figure in the cultural history of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. He achieved considerable distinction in the fields of literature, art history, and historiography, particularly excelling in prose writing. This book provides a detailed and systematic account and textual study of Zhang Dai's great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, grandfather, father, as well as his maternal great-grandfather, maternal grandfather, his close friends, his brothers, wives and concubines, and his nephews and younger male relatives. It reveals a considerable amount of material rarely found in other works. Though not an expansive region, Zhejiang-this deep and fertile land-has nurtured numerous cultural luminaries: Wang Xizhi, Xie Lingyun, Luo Binwang, Meng Jiao, Hanshan, Zhao Mengfu, Huang Gongwang, Wang Meng, Mao Dun, Xia Yan, Yu Dafu, Zhu Kezhen, Tong Dizhou, among others. He is a professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Shaoxing University of Arts and Sciences in Zhejiang, specializing in the teaching and research of classical Chinese literature. He has proofread and punctuated Zhang Dai's Kuai Yuan Dao Gu (Zhejiang Ancient Books Publishing House, 1986) and the classical Chinese novel The Complete Story of Han Xiangzi (Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House, 1990), among other works. His published monographs include A Study of the Yuezhong School of Drama (China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Publishing House, 2000), Zhang Dai's Family Background (Beijing Publishing House, 2004), and A Concise History of Zhejiang Culture (People's Publishing House, 2006).
