Urban Planning Legislation in Katanga, DRC (1910-1959)

In the field of urbanization, the proliferation of individual initiatives-in the absence of a framework previously defined by public authorities-risks leading to the development of this sector without defined land use strategies, prior consideration, planning, or sustainable development and land-use projects. Such an approach would inevitably lead to the irrational consumption of space, the poor integration of buildings into the existing urban fabric, the degradation of landscapes and the natural environment, a lack of control over urban architecture, and the inadequacy of road and sanitation networks befitting a city. These issues, as obstacles to sustainable urban planning that incorporates environmental protection objectives, highlight the need for specific, tailored, and appropriate legislation in this area.
