In 1859, an English XI, led by Nottinghamshire's George Parr, toured North America in what was the first overseas cricket tour in history. It was to be another nine years before a second team visited. Ned Willsher captained that team of 1868; they played six matches against teams of twenty-two in New York, Montreal, Boston and Philadelphia. Willsher, in his 41st year, was still an accomplished fast bowler. Included in his team was 25-year-old George Freeman, rated by many as the fastest bowler they had ever faced. With Alfred Shaw and George Tarrant to call upon, there would be no let-up for the opposing batsmen. Teams of twenty-two or not, this English eleven proved to be a huge test for their American and Canadian opponents.
